The Hermanus Youth Project was established in 2013 and was registered in August 2023 as an NPC (NPO pending). The project started with 14 learners and currently has 283 learners registered and is a multidisciplinary program that aims to inspire innovation, creative thinking, and artistic skills. The program offers a range of visual art, art therapy, crafts, and design courses. The program is run by a team of experienced art educators, and assistants and is supported by businesses and organizations.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

  • ECD /GRADE R-3 We encourage the use of kinetic and tactile materials and aim to teach literacy and numeracy in a practical way through art. This age group has an art class together on Tuesday. Their lessons are planned to teach them how to use shapes and patterns in unique ways and introduce them to colour and different mediums.

  • GRADE 4-7 From Monday to Wednesday, after school, our classes typically have 20-30 learners. We introduce them to the world of art and craft, teaching them about the fundamental elements of art. We also inspire them to share their work by participating in competitions and eisteddfods.

  • GRADE 10-12  Our classes cover Art and Design principles, and provide an introduction to all mediums. They are scheduled from Monday to Thursday and focus on all practical aspects of art and design, as well as marketing and entrepreneurial skills. We feel there is great potential within the community to develop more practical skills, creative initiatives, and business ventures.

  • An “Assistant programme” – has been introduced in 2019, the purpose is to train post-matrics to work with the classes. This programme aims to equip them with the skills needed to earn money and give back to the community. We believe that there is a need to expand this programme and provide more studying opportunities that will increase potential career paths.

Art student from Hawston Secondary School

"As I grew up, I didn't have much but it was a blessing to me to be able to draw the things I love and training to better myself every week. Art has helped me through tough times, it was my peace when I didn't have any. The art classes helped me so much with my social skills. I love and need art in my life. Art is an amazing talent that was given to me from God."
